Astro CMS alternative

An Astro CMS that keeps content in your Astro files.

AstroCanvas is a lightweight Astro visual editor for developers who want on-page editing without moving existing content into a hosted CMS, database or duplicated content model.

When a full headless CMS is more than you need

A traditional Astro CMS is useful for structured collections, multi-author publishing, permissions and content shared across channels. But a small marketing site may only need a safer way to change a heading, paragraph or call to action without searching through component files.

AstroCanvas keeps that smaller job small. Mark the literal text that may be edited, open the visual editor from Astro’s development toolbar and save the approved change directly to the source file. The no-CMS Astro editing guide explains the full workflow and its trade-offs.

How the Astro WYSIWYG workflow works

  1. Add a unique data-astrocanvas ID to literal text in an Astro component.
  2. Run the Astro development server and activate AstroCanvas from the dev toolbar.
  3. Select the marked text on the real page and preview the new wording in context.
  4. Save one atomic, reviewable change to the original .astro file.

Source ownership stays simple

There is no hosted content database to export and no production editing endpoint. Git continues to show every change, your normal deployment process stays the same, and cancelling AstroCanvas does not alter the source it helped you edit.

The safety boundary is deliberate

AstroCanvas does not blindly rewrite arbitrary components. The first release writes only explicitly marked literal text. Dynamic expressions, nested markup, duplicate IDs and unsafe paths stay read-only. That is less magical than a page builder and much easier to trust in a real codebase.

When to choose a full Astro CMS instead

Choose a hosted or Git-based CMS when non-developers need remote access, editorial roles, scheduled publishing, large media libraries or highly structured content. Choose AstroCanvas when a developer owns the repository and wants fast visual edits that remain ordinary source changes.

Try the editor on a real page

The interactive demo lets you select and edit content on a fictional Astro site. Demo changes are never saved, but the interface and workflow match the product direction.
